John Carpenter (born December 24, 1967) became the first millionaire on the United States version of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on November 19, 1999. He held the record for the largest single win in United States game show history, until it was broken by Rahim Oberholtzer on another U.S. quiz show, Twenty One. Carpenter was also the first millionaire (or top prize winner) across all international versions of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire series, and the only one to win the grand prize on any version of Millionaire during the 1990s.
